Flying into Christchurch and then car-pooling is a great option.
There are places to hire cars - forgive me for at the present being unsure who is open and available. Investigate further, because there are many places open.
NB. Driving from Christchurch to Hokitika provides you with three and a half hours of spectacular natural beauty beginning with wide open plains, magnificent mountain ranges climbing to spectacular alpine views and completing with the dense, deep green, wild rainforest.
Things to do and places to see are abundant in number within Hokitika. This means there are also many places to stay.
